Madison Street Fishing
Pier Project
Questions and comments regarding this project
may be addressed to the Planning Department 270-4618
or Engineering Department 270-4567.
Overview
The
City of Troy has received a grant from the Department
of State, Division of Coastal Resources to further redevelopment
work on the former Scolite site at the foot of Madison
Street. The grant has been earmarked to improve public
access and amenities on the city right of way adjacent
to the site and the proposed Rivers & Estuaries
Center.
Madison
Street is one of few points allowing public access to
the Hudson River in South Troy. The street end provides
a popular spot for fishermen in the spring. The plan
began as a way to provide more amenities for fishing
and river watching, including new decking, handicap
accessibility, benches, picnic tables and lighting.
It has evolved to include a stairway leading down to
the river with a hand launch boat slide, street paving
improvements to improve water runoff, and utility improvements
to separate sanitary and storm sewers to reduce overflow
into the river.
Initial
plans for the pier were completed by J.K. Fraser and
Associates and plans for the street improvements and
stairway were completed in-house by Rich Craig in the
Engineering Department. The project received Army Corp
of Engineer approval, and is will be sent out to bid
in early 2009.

Updates
6/2/08
- The Rensselaer Iron Works building adjacent to the
project caught fire last week. The building is in the
process of being demolished. This does not change the
Pier project timeline or scope, but will greatly affect
future redevelopment of the site. The 60,000 sq ft building
and conceptual plans are discussed on the Upper
Hudson Rivers & Estuaries Center page.
