Recycling
The City of Troy's "Single Stream Recycling Program" allows residents to combine all their recyclables into one container. This means no more separation of acceptable items, making recycling easier for the residents while incurring no additional costs to the City. Learn more about our Single Stream Recycling Program (PDF).
Recycling Bins
If you require a bin to be dropped off at your residence or would like to pick one up, please contact the Department of Public Works dispatcher at 518-270-4579.
If you have any specific questions regarding what is recyclable or how to recycle something see our Recycling Guide.
Pickup Schedule
Your recyclables are picked up the same day the garbage is picked up. All recyclable items are to be placed in one or more city-issued blue containers and placed curbside no earlier than 6 p.m. the night prior to pickup or before 6 a.m. on the day of pickup.

Comprehensive Recycling Analysis
Annually, the city submits reports to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation that serve as an overview of the City of Troy initiatives (and their respective results) in the areas of resource management, recycling, diversion, community engagement, and solid waste handling. These documents are meant to be interactive and “living” documents for the use of the community and City, not merely to fulfill reporting requirements for New York State. To view the reports, visit our archive center.
Curbside Composting Pilot Program Report
From September 29, 2021 to September 29, 2023, the City of Troy executed a curbside composting pilot program partially funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). To view the impacts of the program, visit our Recycling Grant Reports Archive.
